Slug

appears here as you type

What it tells you

  • Accents folded, not deleted

Backerei, not bckerei. Characters are decomposed to a base letter first, so the result stays readable rather than losing letters.

  • Handles the awkward letters

The German sharp s becomes ss, and the Nordic o and ae get expanded, because those are distinct letters rather than accented ones.

  • Optional stop word removal

Shortens a long headline, and never returns an empty slug even if the title is entirely common words.

  • Length cap

Trim to a set number of words when a headline is longer than a URL wants to be.

How to use it

  1. 1Paste the headlineThe slug appears as you type, with a preview of the full URL.
  2. 2Trim if it is longRemove common words or cap the word count. Four to six words is a comfortable target.
  3. 3Copy itOne button. Nothing is uploaded at any point.

Questions people ask

How long should a URL slug be?

Short enough to read in a search result, which usually means three to six words. There is no ranking penalty for a long slug, but a truncated one in the results looks careless and is harder to share.

Should I remove stop words from URLs?

Usually yes for length, but not at the cost of sense. Removing them from how-to-fix-a-leaking-tap gives fix-leaking-tap, which is fine. Removing them where they carry meaning, as in the-office versus office, is not.

Hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator and an underscore as a word joiner, so my_page reads as one token and my-page reads as two.

Should I change an existing URL to a better slug?

Rarely. A live URL with links and history is worth more than a tidier one, and every change needs a 301 redirect that leaks a little authority. Fix slugs before publishing, not after.
